Reconnect, rebuild, and grow together
Here’s what to expect during your couples counselling session:
Couples Therapy follows a structured and collaborative process designed to understand your relationship and support meaningful change.
Initial Session
The first session is attended by both partners and focuses on understanding your relationship history, current concerns, and goals for therapy.
This session provides an opportunity for both partners to share their perspectives and begin developing a collaborative plan for therapy.
Initial sessions generally run between 50 and 90 minutes.
Individual Sessions
After the first session, each partner will attend an individual 50-minute session.
These sessions allow time to explore personal perspectives, relationship experiences, and individual concerns that may be influencing the relationship dynamic.
Feedback Session
A follow-up session is then held with both partners to share insights from the assessment process.
During this session, key relationship patterns and challenges are discussed, and a clear therapeutic plan is developed to guide the next stage of therapy.
Ongoing Sessions
Standard therapy sessions are 50 minutes in duration and focus on building skills to improve communication, understanding, and connection.
Sessions take place in a comfortable, supportive environment designed to encourage open and constructive conversation.
Couples Therapy is currently offered face-to-face as well as telehealth (video) at Point Cook Physical.

Read More »Frequently Asked Questions About Couples Therapy
Do both partners need to attend every session?
In most cases, yes — couples therapy is most effective when both partners attend together. However, your therapist may occasionally recommend individual sessions alongside joint sessions, depending on your situation.
How often do we need to attend sessions?
This depends on your goals and schedule. Many couples start with weekly or fortnightly sessions and adjust the frequency as they progress. Your therapist will recommend a cadence that suits your situation.
What types of issues can couples therapy help with?
Couples therapy can support a wide range of concerns including communication difficulties, recurring conflict, trust issues, intimacy changes, and navigating major life transitions like having children, relocation, or career changes. It can also help couples who simply want to strengthen their relationship and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.
Can couples therapy help if only one of us wants to come?
It’s common for one partner to feel more ready than the other. If your partner is hesitant, it may help to start with an open conversation about what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. In some cases, one partner attending individually can still create positive shifts in the relationship.
