TMJ Pain Treatment

Our dedicated team of healthcare professionals utilises a multi-disciplinary approach, incorporating techniques such as manual therapy, exercises, and patient education to effectively manage TMJ pain, improve jaw functionality, and promote overall well-being.

Let's treat your TMJ Pain

Increase stability and improve alignment of the jaw.

TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint – the joint that connects your jaw to your skull.

Disorder or dysfunction of the TMJ involves inflammation, internal structural changes (internal derangement) or degeneration of the joint, or it may be due to an imbalance or over-activity of the jaw muscles, commonly involving muscles of the cervical spine too.

Pain in this joint can be common and can be caused by a number of factors.

Some common causes are:

Muscle spasm can cause significant pain and limitation of movement of the jaw. Dental procedures, where the mouth has been held open for extended periods of time, can cause stress, bruxism and postural dysfunction.

Prolonged cervical protraction, which occurs with poor or stress-related posture, can cause swelling, pain and gradual degeneration of the discs, causing discomfort in the jaw.

The injury may be a blow to the jaw or a fall onto the chin. Treatment can assist with mobilisation of the TMJ and restoring function without pain.

Stress can cause clenching of the jaw, and you may not even know it is occurring. Aggravating activities such as resting your chin on the hand, pencil chewing, wide mouth yawning and nail biting can also cause pain over time. As well as physical treatment, stress management, sleep assessment and diet modification may also assist.

By educating our patients on how to treat pain, we can actually help you prevent it in the future.
