Common Causes Of Back Pain

Back pain and particularly low back pain is common and often a result of poor posture, sudden traumatic injury, fracture, vertebral disc issues or osteoarthritis.
Degeneration of the spine also accounts for a large portion of back pain cases, and is quite normal in the process of ageing.

By educating our patients on back pain treatment, we can actually help you prevent it in the future.

Common Symptoms Of Back Pain

Complex by nature, back and spine disorders carry a number of symptoms. Often the first step for any practitioner will be to identify some common symptoms or sensations in order to put a finger on exactly what the problem is.

Some things to look out for include:

• Persistent aching
• Swelling
• Stiffness along the spine
• Chronic ache, that may interrupt sleep
• Referred pain down the leg or buttock
• Difficulty standing up or sitting down for long periods
• Difficulty balancing on one leg
• Numbness, tingling or pins and needles may be a sign of sciatica, which should be seen to by a practitioner immediately

Your Body Matters.

How We Diagnose Back Pain

Typically our practitioners will review symptoms and decide on one of three possible back disorders:

• Back pain only
• Sciatica
• Spinal Stenosis

Taking into account age, lifestyle factors and medical history the next step may be to provide conservative therapy such as:

• Joint Manipulation
• Posture exercises
• Massage

Testing for strength, mobility, reflexes and general spine alignment can be a quick way to diagnose back disorders.

How We Treat Back Pain

Spinal Manipulation

Proven and well-founded research suggests spinal manipulation improves nerve function, reduces inflammation and relieves pressure on joints.  This is done through moving and thrusting joints in a controlled movement, while ensuring the comfort of the patient.

Soft Tissue Mobilisation

Aiming to break up fibrous muscle tissue, such as scar tissue and relax muscle tension. Often used as an initial treatment and diagnostic tool to feel for problem areas.

Medical Imaging.

To provide further clarification and to make an accurate diagnosis, the practitioner may use medical imaging tests

• CT scan
• X Ray
