Looking after our mental health is as integral to our well being as our physical health. Psychology focuses on enhancing your capacity to cope and providing support during times of specific life challenges. Engaging in therapy will help to resolve crises, reduce distress, develop goals for lasting change and improve your overall well-being.

At your first session, you can discuss your concerns with your psychologist and together develop some treatment goals. Your psychologist may ask you to fill out some short questionnaires to complete a full assessment.

This is variable, depending on your needs and the issues you are seeking treatment for.

Yes, you can! At Point Cook Physical, we offer counselling either face to face in the clinic, or via telephone or video call – the choice is yours.

No, but to claim a Medicare rebate you will need a referral letter accompanied by a current Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP or Psychiatrist. See this link for more details: https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/mental-health-care-plan
If you do not have a referral the full fee will apply.

What is the difference between a Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Psychotherapist or Counsellor?

Psychologists
must be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) which oversees and regulates ongoing professional development and training. Psychologists have a minimum 6 years of Tertiary education and training.

Psychiatrists
are specialised doctors who are medically trained. Psychiatrists generally treat patients with more severe and complex mental illnesses.

Psychotherapists and Counsellors
are not regulated by a statutory body.
